The Need for Multi-Sensor Data Fusion in Structural Health Monitoring of Composite Aircraft Structures

With the increased use of composites in aircraft, many new successful contributions to advancement structural health monitoring (SHM) field for composite aerospace structures have been achieved. Yet its application is still not often seen operational conditions aircraft industry, mostly due a gap between research focus and application, which constraints shift towards improved maintenance strategies such as condition-based (CBM). In this work, we identify highlight two key facets involved maturing SHM structures: (1) engineer who requires holistic damage assessment aircraft’s management, (2) upscaling realistic under in-service conditions. Multi-sensor data fusion concepts can aid addressing these aspects formulate benefits, opportunities, challenges.
